Many of you may have heard that BTRC is going to shut down all the illegally imported handsets in Bangladesh. This is because the government is losing huge amount of revenue due to illegally imported handsets and at the same time consumers are being deceived into buying low quality or clone handsets without realizing it. Eventually BTRC is going to implement this process for them.
According to the notice published on BTRC’s official website and verified page, BTRC will stop all illegal handsets purchased after August 1, 2019. Illegal handsets are those that are brought into the country illegally with tax evasion by the government and are duplicate or clone phones with duplicate IMEI.
Turn off the phone, basically no SIM will work in those phones. However, you can do other things, including using WiFi.
However, BTRC will not stop the purchase of the phone in any way before August 1. So for now, if someone is using an illegally imported phone, it is not subject to closure.
However, they did not specify when the illegally purchased phones would be switched off after August 1.
However, they said they were working to set up a National Equipment Identity Registrar or NEIR database. As soon as the installation of this database is completed, the process of turning off the phone will start.
Although the illegal phones purchased before August 1, 2019 are not closed for the time being, they have to be registered with BTRC in phases. At the same time, if someone travels abroad and buys a phone for personal use or receives a phone gift from someone, it will be possible to register with the BTRC by submitting the appropriate documents so that the phone is not turned off.
