Android is a free and open source operating system. However, there are allegations against Google for manipulating user information to facilitate advertising, and a search has been conducted in Europe and America.
In a recent study by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the country’s authorities acknowledged that Android was “open source” and that its “core technology and technology design are strictly controlled by Google.”
The country says with concern that “research and development work on our country’s mobile operating system is highly dependent on Android”.
Various Chinese companies such as Baidu and Huawei have already reportedly started working on their own operating systems. And in July 2011, Chinese web giant Alibaba unveiled its own mobile OS. This software-driven device called Alien could not escape the notice of Google. They blocked Alien from entering the OST-powered Acer phone market, citing it as a forked-incompatible version of Android. However, Alibaba has denied Google’s allegations.
Note that the “forked version” of software is another software package of the same type developed by modifying the source code of a project. Free open source software usually does not require prior permission to create forks. However, for compatibility and other reasons, the developers must follow a certain policy.
