Google says it has placed a tiny wireless chip between the two layers of the lens. It also has a small glucose sensor. Google wants to add LEDs so that when the amount of glucose in the user’s tears reaches a certain level, the light will flash and warn.
If anyone around you has diabetes, you may have noticed that in order to measure the level of glucose in the blood to know the condition of the disease, the head of the finger is pierced and the blood is taken in a strip and tested in a special machine, which is quite a hassle. Google’s contact lens market may actually be a bit of a relief.
However, the device is still in its infancy. Google writes that they have completed a number of clinical researches, but much more remains to be done.
According to the International Diabetes Foundation, by 2035, 1 in 10 people worldwide will have diabetes. It is dangerous for people with diabetes to have a sudden drop or increase in blood glucose levels above a certain level. This is why this level is monitored with a drop of blood. This new discovery from Google is definitely good news for diabetics.
