Last week, China’s National Intellectual Property Administration granted Huawei the application for trademark registration of their new Hongmeng OS. This confirms the name of Huawei’s new OS. Huawei has been working on a secret project called “Project Z” for the last six years. The goal of this project was to develop their own technology as an alternative to American technologies. Their Hongmeng OS was part of that project. Despite Google’s ban, Huawei officials said they were prepared for such a situation.
Google has already suspended Huawei’s ban for 3 months. However, no one is sure whether there will be a permanent solution. That’s why Huawei has decided to migrate to their new OS. If all goes well, their new phones will hit the market this year with Hongmeng OS installed.
As far as is known, their Hongmeng OS will support all Android apps. However, it will not normally have the Google Play Store. So they will bring a new app store for their new OS. Another thing is that their new OS can be used not only for smartphones but also for numerous devices including PCs. Basically their OS will be cross platform. Since Microsoft and Huawei will not be allowed to use their Windows operating system, they may also use this new OS in their Huawei Matebook series laptops.
Now it remains to be seen to what extent Hongmeng can meet the needs of its customers as an alternative to Android and Windows.
