While Mozilla’s handsets are expected to compete with Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8, and BlackBerry OS’s, Firefox phones will initially only be sold in developing countries. Another thing to note from this is that Firefox smartphones are less likely to be too “feature rich”.
Mozilla has called their operating system a “free alternative”.
Mozilla said that while ZTE, LG, Huawei and TCL have started making these devices, some more companies will join them in the future.
The Firefox operating system has been developed using the modern HTML Five web standard, which the manufacturers claim will give it a distinct advantage. Application programmers may need to master different languages for each platform. But since Firefox OS is web-based, many developers around the world can easily code software for it. Mozilla sees this as a huge opportunity.
But in this age of Android, iOS, Windows Phone and Blackberry OS, will Mozilla be able to take the Firefox operating system forward? How much will be possible? If we want to know the answer, we have to wait a few more days. Let’s see what time says. . . .
