smsWhatsApp and other similar Internet-based messaging services have surpassed conventional text messaging for the first time. Research Institute Informa Reported In 2012, about 19 billion messages were sent using the chatting app. On the other hand, about 16.6 billion SMS were sent at that time.

This trend can be considered as bad news for mobile operators, as many people keep in touch through text messages alongside voice calls. Another research firm, Ovum, estimates that mobile network companies lost about ২ 23 billion in SMS revenue in 2012 due to the popularity of chatting applications.

However, SMS is not so easily lost!

Informa hopes that the popularity of online messaging will increase in the coming years. The company predicts that in 2014, around 50 billion chat messages will be exchanged per day and at the same time the amount of regular SMS will reach 21 billion.

However, Informa acknowledges that while textual differences between SSS and app-based messaging continue to grow, text messaging will continue to play an important role in this sector.

Most of the chat apps are mainly used on smartphones. And there are still many consumers in developing and least developed countries who use feature phones and in this case text messaging is a popular means of communication. On the other hand, in recent times, businesses are turning to SMS marketing in their marketing work where a simple mobile phone set is enough to reach the information to the buyers.
