The company’s biorobotics laboratory has been working on a project to make mechanical snakes for several years. Its main purpose is to enable robots to move around normally like reptiles. If the development of these robots is possible, it will be easy to succeed in various missions by sending them to remote places. In the future, if robots can be developed as “self-learning devices”, they will be able to understand the situation around them.
Two other notable features of that robot snake at Carnegie Mellon University are corkscrewing and pipe rolling. By corkscrewing it is able to move forward by twisting the body between two surfaces. And using the pipe rolling capability, the robot can wrap itself around a pipe-like object and move forward safely.
Scientists want to develop a robotic snake that can swim, move on any surface and adapt to the environment at the same time. In addition to rescue operations funded by the U.S. military, efforts are being made to make it usable in nuclear and other industries.
