Japanese electronics maker Sony has announced the release of a new version of their video game console PlayStation PS4. The device was confirmed at a press conference on February 20, 2013. At a Sony event in New York, the company also announced plans to start selling it later this year.

The new console will have an x86 CPU, 8GB RAM and advanced graphics processor. It is designed to make it easier for developers to create software. Game developers who thought the PlayStation 3, which came on the market in 2006, was relatively complex, are hoping that Sony will prefer the PS4 build.

About 7 million PS3 units have been sold worldwide so far.

Although the exterior design of the PlayStation 4 has not been revealed, its new Dual Shock 4 controller has been shown. It has a front touchpad and motion sensor bar across. Using these will complete player identification and game motion control.

To connect PS4 to social networking, there is a share button with the controller that can be used to upload video clips of games to various social sites (such as YouTube). It will also have the facility to exchange game related content through messages. These features will also be available for scheduled applications on smartphone and tablet devices.

Currently, all gaming console makers are facing increasing challenges in the field of mobile computing.

Sony will also offer PlayStation 4 online gaming features. The streaming game service Gaikai, which was acquired by the company last year, will integrate with Gaikai to give console users the opportunity to instantly enjoy a selection of games on the Internet.

Sony has not commented on the price of the much-anticipated console.
