The first spacecraft, Phile, successfully landed on a comet last November. But within hours of landing, it lost contact with Earth. This incident was then referred to as Phile’s ‘hibernation’. Now the vehicle woke up after about 6 months. The robot was sent to examine comet rocks and ice.

The Phile Lander uses solar energy. But it landed on a comet where it was basically dark. So its solar cells could not produce electricity, so it went into hibernate mode. Scientists say that now that the comet has moved so close to the Sun, light is falling on the solar panel attached to the robot file and it has been reactivated using the electricity it generates.
