In a joint venture between engineers from the U.S. Navy and Virginia Tech Is ready Experimental version of the Shipboard Autonomous Firefighting Robot: SAFFiR. The U.S. Navy has also tested the effectiveness of the two-legged robot on an abandoned ship.

After several experiments, it was found that this robot works well even on uneven floors where it is difficult for other robots to reach. Another feature of it is that it can easily get an idea about the shape and size of an object with the help of heat detection process.

It is expected to be more effective than the “Anaconda” robot used so far. The Anaconda is a commercially used miniature drone designed with the theme ‘Damage Control Technologies for the Twenty First Century (DC-21)’. It is small and easy to control. Its battery can last up to 5 minutes, but subsequent improvements extend its working life to 30 minutes.

It is hoped that Saffir will be able to overcome these limitations. Despite being about 5 feet 10 inches long and weighing 143 pounds, the Sapphire can easily operate in dense smoky environments using sophisticated laser technology and infrared. In addition to human instruction, it also has the ability to work automatically. However, as the tendency to respond immediately slowed down, US naval authorities felt that further development was needed. They also say that it is possible to use it now for small tasks.
