Valve launches video game store for Linux

Valve Corporation, a US-based software company, recently launched one of their Steam game stores Linux version Launched. Free and open source operating system can be run on Ubuntu by downloading hosted games from the company’s online Steam store. From this portal users can access about 70 Linux games including the popular “Counter Strike” and “Team Fortress 2”;

The announcement came shortly after Valve laid off about 10 percent of its employees. Some of these workers were also working on hardware projects.

In addition to games developed by Valve Software, video games from other companies will also be available on the Linux Steam Store. Some of the notable titles are Amnesia, FTL, Sirius Sam3 and World of Go.

Valve Source Engine also provides specialized software and tools for developers.

In addition to opening stores for Ubuntu, Valve is offering up to 75 percent discount on the Linux version of their PC and Mac games. This offer is valid till 21st February.

Game companies do not develop much software for Linux. There are only about 60 games available for Ubuntu in the Steam Store, with over 2000 titles for Windows.

The new store was important to Valve Corporation at the time, as the game console they were going to build in the near future was expected to use Linux as the operating system.
