Search service provider Google has appealed to a Russian court challenging a decision by the Russian government regarding a YouTube video. The US company took the step after authorities blacklisted a clip on Google’s video-sharing site. Google says it has been reminded by the court to be more aware of the blacklisting rules adopted by Russian policymakers.
Google has already banned the video clip of the incident from being shown in Russia. However, the video can be seen from other countries. The video, uploaded by Russia-based Snigova on January 17, 2012, is alleged to have provided information on “how to commit suicide.” It shows a woman doing something with a razor blade and artificial makeup that looks like she cut off one of her wrists.
Last November, Moscow introduced an amendment to their information law that would allow any website in Russia to be taken offline to protect children from unwanted activity. If the accused did not stop showing video clips, the entire YouTube site would have been blocked by the local ISP.
In Russia, Google’s YouTube has previously blocked videos at various times due to government interference. However, no specific number of videos have been released.
Not only in Russia, but in many other countries of the world, video clips and even the entire YouTube site are being blocked on a number of issues which you should have known beforehand.
